Can your dog be a Good Neighbour?
A well-mannered dog is a joy to live with and a welcome sight in any community. The Canadian Kennel Club’s Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) Program recognizes dogs and handlers who demonstrate the skills, confidence, and responsible behaviour that make dogs valued members of society.
The Kamloops Regional Kennel Club is excited to be hosting a Canine Good Neighbour Evaluation on July 19, 2026, and we invite handlers of all experience levels to come and give it a try.
More than an Obedience Test
The Canine Good Neighbour program was created to promote responsible dog ownership, strengthen the bond between dogs and their handlers, and encourage positive interactions between dogs and the public.
Unlike a formal obedience competition, the CGN evaluation is not about perfect precision. Instead, it assesses whether a dog can behave in a calm, reliable, and trustworthy manner in everyday situations, while also evaluating the handler’s ability to guide and control their dog with kindness and confidence. Both purebred and mixed-breed dogs are welcome to participate.
What does the evaluation include?
The CGN evaluation consists of 12 practical exercises that reflect situations dogs may encounter in daily life, including:
- Greeting a friendly stranger
- Accepting petting from a stranger
- Grooming and handling
- Walking politely on leash
- Walking through a crowd
- Sit, down, and stay
- Coming when called
- Playing and settling calmly
- Passing another dog politely
- Responding appropriately to distractions
- Remaining calm during supervised separation
- Walking politely through a doorway or gate
Rather than rewarding flashy obedience, the evaluation celebrates dogs that are pleasant companions at home and in public.

Whether you’ve been training for months or simply want to see how your dog performs in a structured evaluation, we’d love to welcome you.
Is my dog ready?
The CGN evaluation is open to dogs 12 months of age or older and does not require formal obedience training. It is a pass/fail evaluation designed to assess everyday manners rather than competitive performance.
If your dog can walk politely on leash, remain reasonably calm around people and other dogs, and enjoys working with you, you may already have many of the skills needed to succeed.
Building better dogs and better communities
The Canine Good Neighbour program is about more than earning a certificate. It celebrates the countless hours owners invest in training, socialization, and responsible stewardship, while helping demonstrate that well-trained dogs are valued members of our communities.
Whether you’re interested in Rally, Obedience, Agility, Fetch, or simply having a trustworthy companion you can take anywhere with confidence, CGN provides an excellent foundation.
We hope you’ll join us on July 19 and celebrate everything that makes dogs our very best neighbours.
